What to do with all your ideas

If you’re creative like us, you probably have LOTS of ideas that come and go most days.

And sometimes it can be tricky to capture your ideas so you don’t forget them.

Today we want to share how you can easily organize all your ideas by creating a system and how to evaluate your ideas so you can decide what to prioritize now. Here’s how…

Create a system to organize all your ideas

First, create a SIMPLE and easy system for yourself that can help you organize all your ideas.

We’ve found it’s so important to actaully organize all those ideas you have floating around. That way you won’t have any trouble accessing them when you’re ready to use them. Otherwise you might forget your “awesome idea” or you might forget where you put it when you’re ready to work on it.

Depending on your personality you can organize your ideas digitally or in some type of physical notebook.

We use both! It just depends on the type of idea.

Kristin loves using Evernote for any long-term storage! You can sign up here for a free month of premium. (affiliate link fyi)

We also LOVE using the Notes app on our phone for any current ideas that we need to quickly write down before we forget.

Other times we love using a pretty and simple physical notebook like this MochiThings notebook for ideas that like to be handwritten, doodled or drawn out.

If you have ideas all stored all over the place you can simply break them down into different categories:

  • Creative ideas (ex. book ideas, your next project, podcast episode etc)

  • Personal (brain dump for mental health, to do list)

  • Short term ideas (ideas that start & finish quickly)

  • Long term ideas (ideas that take longer to nurture & work on)

  • Ideas for your personal & family life (recipes, family trip, new family traditions etc)

How to Prioritize Your Ideas

After you’ve created a system to organize your ideas (remember keep it simple) you can then start to evaluate your ideas and decide what to prioritize.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Is this an idea I can stay excited about?

  • Will this idea move the needle forward in my work?

  • Will this idea help me create the life I want to live?

  • Is this idea aligned with my purpose statement?

  • Why do I feel drawn to this idea? Is it just distracting me from my current project?

If you can practice evaluating your ideas instead of running off with each new idea, you’ll be able to stay focused on what matters most to you and actually make the most progress.

Want extra help prioritizing your ideas?

Kristin has a FREE 5-day email course called The Prioritization Process that goes over these steps in much more detail.

It’ll help you balance multiple projects, decide where to focus, and systematically work through your creative projects to completion!
