How To Strengthen Your Family With Words

“We believe that our words have tremendous power to create, and when we are intentional with our words in our homes, we can create a strong family culture built on truths that are meaningful and personal.

Sir Francis Bacon said, “Writing makes an exact man”... and we believe that writing can also make an exact family.

Every family has core values, guiding principles, and a purpose but for most, these things are just sort of floating around in there, undefined, vague.

It is strengthening to articulate your identity and purpose as a family… it unifies, it protects, and it exacts.  We become what we think, say, desire and focus on.  This is an awesome opportunity for families to intentionally create what they will become.”

-Erin Allen

What does this look like?

“Well, we did this work for our own family, and the final product is a beautiful poster that we have framed on the wall in a high traffic area.

We hold a family night each week and it’s during that time that we read over our Family Crest & Purpose. It’s been two years now, and at this point even our young children have it basically memorized.

One of our guiding principles is, “We honor each other’s agency”.  I overheard one of our kids say to another who was trying to force his younger brother to keep playing a certain game when he didn’t want to anymore, “You need to honor his agency!”  We know that these truths are sinking in.”

Would creating a family crest & purpose help your family?

“Based on our experiences working with a wide variety of families over the past couples of years, we’d say absolutely, this would work for everyone no matter what stage they are in.

We’ve worked with newly-weds with no children, we’ve worked with young families who are just getting started, and families who are well-established and have some kids at home and some that have left for college.

It’s a strengthening and meaningful process no matter what stage a family is in… if they do this work early on when they’re just getting started, they can raise their children with these foundational truths from the beginning, and if their children are older, that’s a really cool thing because then the kids are old enough to really participate and be a part of the creation process.

No matter what stage a family is in, this process is pivotal.”
