Lacking motivation to keep up with good time management?

We all know it’s easy to be excited about a goal or project in the beginning, but what do you do when your motivation for a new schedule, system, or goal fizzles out?

Know that you can’t rely on motivation or willpower or having the energy. The plan has to work even if we don’t feel like following through.

4 tips to stay motivated with a new time management goal:

  1. Make sure your plan for your goal is not too complicated. It shouldn’t change too many things or your brain will be overwhelmed by all the new requirements and just give up. Instead, SIMPLIFY your plan or make it easier in some way. Implement one or two small steps at a time and build self-trust in those as you move on.

Here’s an example: you want a new morning routine, so you write out the perfect morning routine complete with exercise, scripture study, getting ready, and a few minutes to read. Instead, start by getting up a few minutes earlier for ONE thing you will be excited enough to get out of bed for.

  2. Make sure you’re clear on your reason WHY you are making a change. If you’re fizzling out, it may be because you don’t actually want to do it! You might be setting the goal out of obligation of what you “should” do.

If you truly want this change, you have to go a little deeper and find the true desire behind it.

Example: I (Kristin) started running because I felt guilty for not exercising and thought it would be good for me to get some cardio. But I struggled to stay committed to that goal. What helped me get out the door every day was learning that exercising would give me a chance to process emotions. That was truly motivating to me!

  3. Give your thoughts a chance to take root before taking action. Often, we jump into new actions and strategies and solutions before taking a moment to align our minds with those actions. Your brain is practiced at thinking in a way that supports your previous time management habits.

So make an intentional effort to let your thoughts marinate on this new plan as you begin to experiment gently. Decide ahead of time what thoughts will inspire your actions and practice them on purpose.

  4. Don’t be surprised when it gets hard. Any time you start something new, you’ll reach a point where you no longer know the next step (or the next five steps!). That often leads to frustration, which can lead to giving up.

Instead of stopping, decide that it’s okay to not know how to make it work right now. Trust that as you keep going, the way will become clear.
