How to Get What You Truly Desire

Try journaling through these questions in this self-inquiry process to help you find clarity, understand your motivations, and get what you truly want. Don’t worry we’ll walk you through it.

First fill in the blank:

  • I want __________ but ________. (Write down what you want and don’t have and the reason you think you don’t have it.)

  • ex. I want an ipad but I don’t have the money for it.

Next ask yourself these questions:

  • Why do I want it?

  • Why can’t I have it?

  • Is that true?

  • What it if wasn’t true?

  • What is the truth?

  • How does it feel?

Start evaluating your answers:

  • Where’s the clarity in what I truly want? (New desire, new approach to old desire, new feeling)

  • What would it be like to move toward what I want while feeling ______? (Insert the feeling you truly want.) ex. content, peaceful, heard, valued, productive etc.

What did you find?

What you might find is a new way to approach the same desire. Maybe you keep working toward the desire with a different motivation behind it. Maybe you realize you don’t actually want what you thought you wanted. Or maybe you find clarity on a new way to get what you want while feeling the way you wanted to all along.

We promise that if you take the time to do some self-inquiry and go through these questions you’ll start uncovering exactly what it is that you truly want.

A few extra tips to get what you truly want

Try this journal prompt: How could I change my desire for this?? How is this thing not serving me? Is it truly what I want? Do I want to be the kind of person who….?

If you have anxious or restless feelings that start popping up, it might be a sign that there’s a decision to be made or something to give attention to.

Try leaning into fully experiencing all the emotions that come along with your desire. Taking a step back and letting all the emotions and experiences be a full experience can help you find peace, joy and contentment along the way and can help get rid of some of the “drama” attached to your desire.

Be sure to give your important thoughts attention and focus -- “pay attention to me, there’s a desire you need to look at. There’s something here for you.”
