Time Management Reset

This article kicks off our time management series! EVERY aspect of personal growth is made easier by having good time management skills -- and you can learn those skills much more easily than you think!

Today, we’re talking about how to do a time management reset. But first we want to share our approach to time management because it focuses on having find plenty of time for things YOU love.

Our approach to time management is this:

  1. We believe it's possible to have plenty of intentional time with loved ones AND regular time to work on goals, projects, and guilt-free relaxation or self care.

  2. We have plenty of intentional time by finding and utilizing our magic hours: pockets of time that are just our own. It’s important to decide ahead of time how you’ll use those hours. We like seeing this in a visual format (see our FREE time management toolkit that includes a printable magic hours grid).

  3. We also believe our approach to time management needs to shift depending on season of life, changing priorities, time of year, etc. It’s important to be flexible.

Time Management Reset:

Create an ideal weekly schedule from scratch

What we’re doing here: looking at your week as if it’s a blank slate. Taking everything off and deliberately putting things back on again with intention.

  • You may end up putting everything back on, but by choosing it again, you’re owning it as YOUR choice, not just something you have to do.

  • You are in charge of these decisions. And they aren’t permanent. You can make the choices again differently anytime you want.

As we fill up your schedule again, we’re going to see where there is space to fit in the things that matter to you that you aren’t currently making time for.

What do you wish you had more time for?

  • Spirituality

  • Present time with your kids, individual attention

  • Self care

  • Leisure/relaxation time

  • Date nights

  • Magic hours — time for a creative project

  • Social time

Choose 1-2 things that aren’t happening and add them onto your ideal weekly schedule. Examples:

  • Spiritual practice each morning

  • 30 minutes of one-on-one time per day per kid

  • Date nights once a month

  • 5 magic hours each week

  • Setting aside an hour before bed for self care or relaxing

Build a new weekly schedule from scratch

Once you’ve found 1-2 things that you want to make happen in your ideal weekly schedule, it’s time to make room for them into your calendar.

This may look like adding it first thing in your day so you’ll for sure get to it.

  • Ex. Spiritual practice each morning right when you get up. Let’s say this is at 6:30am.

Or it may look like adding it into a time of day that you weren’t being very intentional with.

  • Ex. 30 minutes of one-on-one time per day per kid. Let’s say this is at 4pm.

Once you’ve added 1-2 things into your ideal schedule, it’s time to deliberately put everything else back into your calendar again with intention.

Remember:

  • You may end up putting everything back on, but by choosing it again, you’re owning it as YOUR choice, not just something you have to do.

  • You are in charge of these decisions. And they aren’t permanent. You can make the choices again differently anytime you want.

Evaluate your schedule & adjust

Once you’ve added everything back into your ideal schedule, see how it goes for a week and adjust. Then see how it goes the next week and adjust again.

It’s not going to be perfect and that’s okay.

Your schedule doesn’t need to be perfect for you to love it. You get to make changes on your calendar OR in your mind to help you love it. It’s up to you!

One last pro tip:

  • As you’re starting to use your new schedule, watch out for any mind drama! It might sound like, “I’m not keeping the house clean enough now that I’m spending more time on my creative project,” or “I’m not giving my kids enough time right when they wake up because I’ve extended my spiritual practice in the morning.”

  • You get to decide what’s enough. You make decisions based on that and own them in confidence. Have your own back about it. Adjust when needed.
