What most of us do first when facing something new and why it’s a mistake

When preparing for a big change, most of us immediately look for outside resources to help us. Whether we check out books, internet searches, youtube, blogs, podcasts, friends advice or something else we usually find ourselves asking everyone for help & for their opinion.

Researching like this can be so fun and super helpful, but it’s really important to have this be the last step in preparing for a big change.

It’s important to have a good foundation of yourself BEFORE you consume all this info. That way you will better be able to discern what works best for you and not just what others are telling you to do. This is especially important because we are all so different, somebody’s experience although helpful, might not be your experience.

So the next time you have a big change coming up, be sure you have nurtured other areas in your life like this first:

  1. your spirituality & intuition

  2. an important relationship in your life

  3. your mental and physical health and

  4. creating better repeatable systems in your home/life to reduce stress and time

  5. and then you can look for helpful information from lots of outside resources after you’ve created a good foundation of who you are and what you specifically need.

Any kind of major life change (even the good ones!) can throw you into a tailspin. We’ve got 5 steps to give you confidence in navigating this new phase of life. Click through to our site for a recap of this episode.

Here are 5 ways to prepare for a big change

  1. Increase your spirituality & intuition

    • ex. creating a morning spiritual routine you look forward to, connecting with God throughout the day, being still just for a minute in the afternoon, going for a walk, having some quiet time before bed etc.

    • This is my number one and I feel is the most important thing you can do to prepare for a big change. There are so many factors, so many unknowns and things you can’t control. So if you can strengthen your spirituality it is going to be your compass for ANY big change you have to face.

    • “That was the biggest thing when I found out that I was going to be a mother -- I knew that if I strengthened my relationship with God, my faith in Him would increase and I could trust in His timing and plan.” - Laura

    • “Strengthening my spirituality has been like a compass for me and allowed me to be able to direct all my other decisions. God is in charge, He can see the big picture. So why wouldn't I pick Him as the compass to help guide me? It's so crazy how we always go out to outside resources first. Because nobody knows exactly how you are, or how your life is going to work out. But God does. He is the one that you should use as a compass.”

  2. Strengthen an important relationship in your life

    • ex. your spouse, child, friend, anyone who is going to help you through this big change.

    • When you take the time to really nurture those relationships that are most dear to you, you will be able to see a really positive impact in your own life! Although we know we only have control over our own thoughts and feelings, it can make a huge difference in our lives when our most important relationships in life our being nurtured and well taken care of.

  3. Increase your mental and physical health

    • ex. sleep, food, exercise, and things that help cultivate a mental healthy/mindset for you like journaling your thoughts, going for a walk etc.

    • This step can seem simple, but is usually the first one we push aside when a big change or challenge happens in our life.

    • “Whatever big change you’re facing, your body and mind is the vehicle that will take you through it so be sure to take care of it!”

  4. Creating better repeatable systems to make your life easier

    • ex. Meal planning, creating a good system for keeping track of you finances, batch working, a better laundry system etc.

    • Getting one repeatable system or one habit down will not only make your life easier & less stressful, but can also give you that extra confidence you need when dealing with a big change.

  5. Getting helpful and practical resources from others

    • ex. books, internet searches, youtube, blogs, podcasts, friends advice etc. Anything where you’re looking for tips, ideas, help, info, opinions from outside resources.

    • This step can be so fun and helpful, but make sure it is the LAST step in preparing for a big change!

    • It’s important to have a good foundation for yourself BEFORE you consume lots of info from others. That way you will better be able to discern what works best for you and not just what others are telling you to do.
