Find Your Minimum Baseline

Decide what activities are absolutely necessary to keep up on life. Maybe it’s keeping up on the dishes or the laundry. Maybe you want to make sure you don’t go more than a couple days without a shower. Maybe prayer is essential.

Then let go of the rest without guilt or drama. Give yourself permission to be in survival mode and trust that you’ll get back to your normal, intentional habits soon.

Ask Yourself, “What Do I Actually Need Right Now?”

Sometimes the things we let go of during survival mode are actually the things we need most in survival mode.

It can be hard to know whether you should let go of your normal personal growth habits and giving yourself grace for not keeping up on them the way you normally would during survival mode. It might give you the break you need -- but also consider using those very habits as a resource because you know that they will actually help you through survival mode.

Ask yourself: “What do I actually need during this time?? What is it that I’m lacking? Can these habits or goals help me or are they distracting me from what I need most right now?”

It’s not about checking off your good habits every day, but actually giving yourself what you need.

Ask For Help Before You Reach Your Breaking Point

When you feel negativity, stress, anger, or sadness building up inside, ask for help! It can be as simple as telling someone, “I’m having a hard time and I need some help.”

Make sure you’re communicating with yourself enough to know what you really need, then communicating with loved ones to help them know what you need from them.

Reflect on Survival Mode When It Ends

Know you’ll end up in survival mode again someday and try to navigate it a little more intentionally next time. What would have helped you during that time? Was it beneficial to take a few minutes alone to pray or think or process? What tools actually helped and served you this time and how can that help you the next time around?

When we’re in survival mode, we often forget what truly helps us or we underestimate just how much something simple can serve us. Make a list and trust that those things will help you when you’re in survival mode.

One Last Tip

Don’t think of survival mode as wasted time! Think of it as the downtime necessary to rest,  recover, process grief, or get used to a new way of life. Trust that that time is not useless -- it’s accomplishing a purpose for your benefit.
