Ep. 129 How To Enjoy Self Care and Drop the Guilt

You probably know you could use some better self care, but what would that look like? And how do you realistically drop the guilt about it? As you listen to this episode, we want you to imagine what it would be like to not just take care of yourself, but to GENEROUSLY take care of yourself.

We’ll share a few ideas of our own, plus:

  • What can happen when we go above and beyond in our self care

  • What being generous to ourselves looks like for each of us

  • A practice to start noticing where you’re withholding generous self care from yourself throughout the day

4 journal prompts to enjoy self care and drop the guilt

Dropping the guilt is all about creating new thoughts! You just have to teach your brain what you want to believe and then recognize and question the guilt when it comes up. Here are 4 journal prompts that can help you finally enjoy taking care of yourself and leave the guilt behind.

  1. When have you NOT enjoyed self care?

  2. WHY aren’t you generous to yourself when it comes to self care?

  3. HOW do you want to practice being more generous with your self care?

  4. WHEN could I practice being more generous to myself?

Let’s go over these in detail.

  1. When have you NOT enjoyed self care?

This is a great little exercise you can try today. When you go about your day after reading this, we want you to just NOTICE if you’re withholding things from yourself. Are there times throughout the day where you’re not being as generous to yourself as you could be?

ex. I was cooking dinner, feeling like I had to rush. There was no enjoyment involved. So I paused, took a few deep breaths and asked how could I take care of myself better during this time and how could I enjoy it? Then I turned on some really great music, changed the dinner recipe to something I enjoyed cooking and was able to enjoy taking care of myself instead of rushing through something I just had to do.

Just taking note of when you’re NOT being generous to yourself can help you recognize how often that’s happening and help you choose to be generous to yourself instead!

2. Why aren’t you generous with yourself when it comes to self care?

This is such a great question to ask yourself! Being generous with yourself just means: showing a readiness to give more of something than is strictly necessary or expected.

Are any of these reasons why you aren’t generous to yourself and aren’t enjoying your self care?

If you can take the time to question THE WHY and ask yourself, “Is it true? Is it really serving me?” then you’ll be able to start doing something differently.

3. How do you want to practice being more generous with you self care?

The great thing about self care and really just taking care of yourself is that you get to choose what that looks like. Only you know exactly what you need and want.

So just start experimenting. Visualize what “taking care of yourself” looks like for you and how you could start enjoying it more. How could you be generous with yourself? Or in other words how could you give yourself more than is strictly necessary or expected. How could you surprise yourself?

4. When could you practice being more generous with your self care?

What time of day could you work on this? Is there a time of day that you could set aside for yourself? Are there 5 or 10 extra minutes you could give yourself what you actually need?

What can happen when we go above and beyond in our self care?

You might find that something magical can happen when you are ready to give MORE to yourself than is strictly necessary or expected. If we are more generous with ourselves it can strengthen the trust we have for ourselves.

So if you want to improve the skill of trusting yourself, you need to be generous with yourself and that includes taking care of yourself!

You deserve this! Taking care of yourself can involve pampering, but it doesn’t have to. Just giving yourself what you actually need and want will do the trick!
